February to April; before crabgrass germinates
What to use: Pre-emergent labeled for your grass
Watch local soil temperatures: crabgrass often starts germinating around 50 to 55°F sustained near the surface. Apply before germination and water in as directed; most products also prevent lawn seed from establishing.
Why: Timing matters more than the number on a bag.

Mow on firm ground, removing no more than one-third of the blade. Use the upper end of your species range during summer stress.

Cool-season spring seedlings face summer heat before they have strong roots. Warm-season lawns establish in warm weather; St. Augustine needs sod or plugs, not seed.

Use your species calendar: Bermuda needs a different nitrogen program from low-input centipede. Apply only in active growth at the locally recommended rate, and keep granules off pavement.

What to use: Rain gauge and sprinkler
About an inch of total water a week is a starting point for an established, actively growing lawn, not a quota. Water early, wet the root zone, and stop if water runs off.
Why: Soil and weather decide how much water stays available.

What to use: Preventive grub insecticide, only if justified
Use past damage and local Extension advice to decide. Late-summer rescue treatments target young larvae; they are different from preventive products.

Delay aggressive renovation and herbicides on stressed turf. Avoid pushing cool-season grass with summer nitrogen; warm-season feeding belongs in active growth and depends on species and a soil test.

Give seedlings time to establish before freezing weather. Warm-season turf heading into dormancy should wait for its next active growing season.
