A little lawn sense

Should I rake leaves off my lawn?

Remove thick leaf cover, but light dry leaves can be mulched with a mower. The goal is to keep the grass visible and able to get light.

Mow a light layer

Use a sharp blade when leaves are dry. Make another pass if needed, checking that small pieces settle between grass blades.

Remove heavy piles

Rake or collect wet mats and thick accumulations. Compost them or use them in appropriate beds rather than leaving a blanket over turf.

Work with the weather

Do not drive equipment over saturated ground. Keep storm drains clear and avoid blowing leaves into the street.

Questions from the yard

Can I leave a thick layer all winter?

It can smother grass; remove mats before they settle in.

Do I need special fertilizer to break down leaves?

Do not add fertilizer just for leaf disposal. Follow the lawn’s normal soil-guided program.
