A little lawn sense

When should I fertilize my lawn?

Feed during your grass’s growing season and use a soil test to guide amendments. Cool-season and warm-season lawns do not share one schedule.

Know the grass

Cool-season grass generally benefits most from fall feeding. Warm-season grasses use nitrogen after spring green-up and during summer growth. Centipede needs a conservative species-specific program.

Read the analysis

The three numbers describe nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Local rules may restrict phosphorus. Follow the lab, label and local Extension rate rather than choosing the biggest number.

Keep it on the lawn

Measure the area, calibrate the spreader and sweep granules off pavement. Do not apply to frozen, saturated or dormant turf, or immediately before heavy rain.

Questions from the yard

Does more fertilizer make grass healthier?

Too much can cause stress and nutrient loss. Match the dose to the grass and recommendation.

Does winterizer suit every lawn?

No. Dormant warm-season lawns should not receive a generic late nitrogen feeding.
