A little lawn sense
What does core aeration do for my lawn?
Core aeration pulls small plugs of soil out of the lawn. The holes relieve compaction so roots can get air and water.
Check for a reason
Heavy foot traffic and compacted soil are good reasons to consider it. A healthy lawn on loose soil does not need a yearly appointment just because the calendar says so.
Choose the growing season
Late summer into early fall suits cool-season turf. Aerate warm-season grass after full green-up while it can recover, usually late spring into early summer. Avoid heat stress, frozen ground and saturated soil.
Rent or hire?
Rent if you can safely transport and control the heavy machine. Hire if access, slopes or lifting make that difficult. Mark shallow utilities, sprinkler heads and invisible fences before work. Ask for hollow tines that remove plugs.
Questions from the yard
Should I pick up the soil plugs?
Usually leave them to break down on the lawn.
Can I seed after aeration?
Yes, during the right seeding window. Seed still needs soil contact, moisture and time to establish.
