A little lawn sense
Why will grass not grow under my trees?
Grass needs light, and tree roots compete for water. Deep shade can be a better place for mulch or shade-adapted plants than another bag of seed.
Watch the light
Observe the area across a day and through the leafy season. A patch that looks sunny in winter can be deeply shaded in summer.
Match the plant to the site
Some fescues tolerate more shade than many lawn grasses; St. Augustine and some zoysias offer options in warm regions. None thrives in total shade. Ask Extension about locally adapted choices.
Reduce the pressure
Mow at the higher end of the appropriate range and reduce foot traffic. Avoid piling soil over tree roots or removing roots to make grass grow. Use a mulched bed where turf repeatedly fails.
Questions from the yard
Can I fix shade with fertilizer?
More nitrogen cannot replace sunlight.
Should I prune trees just for grass?
Ask a qualified arborist before major pruning; protect the tree’s health.
