A little lawn sense

Should I rent lawn equipment or hire someone?

Rent when you can safely move, operate and return the machine. Hire when weight, slopes or access make the job difficult.

Rent for a diagnosed job

A hollow-tine aerator suits compaction. A vertical mower removes excess thatch. A slit seeder helps place seed in soil. Pick the job first; the rental counter is not a diagnosis.

Check access and transport

Ask about machine weight, loading, ramps, protective equipment and training. Mark irrigation, shallow lines and underground pet fences before work. Follow the operator’s manual and keep bystanders away.

Compare the whole job

Include transport, cleanup, disposal and time when comparing quotes. Ask a contractor what equipment and timing they propose. There is no universal price that fits every yard.

Questions from the yard

Can I rent an aerator for a wet lawn?

Wait until soil is moist but not saturated; heavy machinery can damage wet ground.

Are spike shoes the same as core aeration?

No. Hollow-tine machines remove soil plugs; spike tools only make holes.
