A little lawn sense

How do I fix dog spots in my lawn?

Concentrated dog urine can burn grass and leave a greener ring. Diluting fresh spots and changing the dog’s bathroom area help prevent repeats.

Confirm the pattern

Watch where the dog goes and compare that with the spots. Brown patches elsewhere may have another cause, including water stress or disease.

Prevent another round

Rinse fresh urine with plain water when practical. Train the dog to use a designated area. Do not add supplements or change drinking water to fix the lawn without veterinary advice.

Repair in season

Remove dead material, loosen the surface and seed, sod or plug for your grass type in its growing window. Skip extra fertilizer on urine-burned areas and keep the dog off new growth.

Questions from the yard

Will lime fix dog spots?

Urine injury is not a reason to add lime without a soil test.

Is every round brown spot from a dog?

No. Confirm the pattern before choosing a remedy.
