A little lawn sense
Does my lawn need dethatching?
Dethatching removes an excessive layer of stems and roots between soil and green grass. Loose mower clippings are not the same thing.
Measure before renting
Cut a small wedge of turf and measure the brown, springy layer above the soil. A layer over about half an inch can warrant management; a thin layer is normal.
Choose a gentle first step
Correct excessive feeding, compaction and poor drainage. Core aeration can help conditions that slow decomposition. Do not power-rake a lawn just to collect a little dead grass.
Work while grass can recover
For cool-season turf, late summer or early fall is generally better than stressful weather. Warm-season turf needs active growth. A vertical mower can be aggressive, so match settings to your grass and remove the debris.
Questions from the yard
Do clippings cause thatch?
Normal mowing clippings break down readily and are not the main source of thatch.
Should I dethatch every spring?
No. Measure the layer and assess the lawn first.
